As you know, the small Committee which it had been intended should represent the University and advise on short-range planning, and on which you had most kindly consented to serve, had not met before the liberation of Hong Kong in August 1st. In the circumstances, it was decided that it would be better to postpone any meeting of this Committee and to await the return to his country of the Vice-Chancellor.
It has now been decided to enlarge both the membership and scope of the Committee, which will now be known as the Hong Kong University Advisory Committee.

I am very glad to learn that you are willing to accept membership of the Hong Kong University Advisory Committee.
As you may know, the University buildings in Hong Kong have been considerably damaged and almost all the equipment has been looted or destroyed. Apart from these losses, there has, of course, been a complete interruption of matriculation and graduation, so that the position may be said to be that while Hong Kong University has existence, it does not operate.
It is, however, necessary not only that the urgent demand for doctors, teachers, and
